ICTGA launches Irish Christmas tree essay competition for primary schools

It’s time to get creative!

Students in primary schools across the 32 counties of Ireland are being encouraged to take part in a writing competition, where they could win a real Irish-grown Christmas tree for both their school and their family, as well as cash prizes.
 
Fifth and Sixth class students are being asked to write a discussion-type essay entitled “All I Want for Christmas Is A Real Irish Christmas Tree’.  Based on research, the essay must be between 350 and 450 words and explain why they want a real Irish Christmas Tree this year.

As well as being fun, the project aims to enhance and develop several elements of the Primary School Curriculum, including IT Skills, Environmental Studies, Rural Science, Geography, Enterprise, Education, Geography , Literacy and Numeracy and Science. 

Participating schools are being invited to hold a competition to select a winning essay that will represent their school in the County. From this, four Regional winners will be selected, one of which will be announced the National Winner in November.   

The prizes for the winning students are: 
  • County Winners will receive two Christmas Trees– one for the family and one for the school
  • As well as the Christmas tree, the four provincial winners will receive a cheque for €50
  • As well as the Christmas tree, the National winner will receive a cheque for €150

The essay may also be a collaborative piece of work, with a maximum of four people in each team. In this case, if successful, each team member will receive a Christmas tree, as will the student's school.
 
Alongside this, every participating schools will receive a Christmas Tree seedling/plant in early 2016 with planting and after-care instructions.

  • Reasons for choosing a Christmas tree
  • Carbon Footprint
  • Oil industry By-Products
  • Recycling
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Natural scent
  • Decorating the tree
  • Supporting home production
  • Tradition and Customs
 
All entries must be sent from the school’s email address, and should include:
  • Students Name
  • Class Teacher
  • School Address
  • School Email Address:
  • Telephone No.
  • Mobile No:
  • School’s winning essay entry
 
All essays must be typed up and emailed to joepflynn@gmail.com
 
However, if unable to email an entry, participants also have the option of sending a hard copy of the essay to Joe Flynn. Please e-mail joeflynn@gmail.com for address details. 
 
The closing date for submissions is Friday, 13th November and the winner will be announced on the 20th November.
